“Oh! Good evening Anthony but Hazel please.” I corrected.
“Alright. Can I come in?”
“Yeah sure.” I stepped aside for him to enter.
“Will you like to have some coffee?”
“No, I’m okay.”
We sat facing each other.
“You must know the reason why I’m here.” He started.
My face fell at that.
“Mr madrigal drinks now, he would drink until he gets drunk every night. Only if you will tell him what he did wrong, he is ready to make amend.”
“He didn’t do anything wrong.” I said.
“I don’t know if I should tell you this, though it was supposed to ever be a secret but I think you should know. You must remember the day I served all your favorite food, he was the one who prepared everything.”
I raised my head at the revelation.
“Also, when you were still sharing separate rooms, on days when you get back from work and would complain of your feet aching, later in the night I would see him bearing a bowl of hot water and towel to your room while you were sleeping to help you with massaging them.”
No wonder the day following they would feel like they were never aching.
“Whenever he gets back from work, he would ask me how you were doing, also he would ask if you complained about them overworking you. Do you know he doesn’t like basketball? Yet he lied to you about liking it and the reason why he had a basketball court in his house. I’m trying to tell you the extent to which he loves you. There are others. If he could do all that, he will be ready to do anything to make amend for whatever he did wrong. Please give him another chance.” His brows were knitted, intense sadness clearly written all over his face.
“He really didn’t do anything wrong but I don’t know if I can ask you for a favor?”
“Go ahead.” He said.
“No matter what, can you please stay by his side and make him stop drinking?”
“About staying by his side I can do that but making him stop drinking, I have done everything to make him stop but he wouldn’t.”
“Can you continue to try?”
“It will be hard but I will continue to try.”
“I should get going, I wasn’t supposed to be out for long, I only told him I would be out to get groceries but please about what I just told you, try to think on it.”
“I will.” I escorted him to the door.
Anthony’s words kept me thinking.
The following day, at past nine in the night, I noticed a car parked downstairs through the window of my room.
It looked very much like madrigal’s car.
Thinking he might come up to my floor, I locked the door behind.
He didn’t come up but remained in his car until later in the night when it was time for me to sleep.
Just some minutes after I switched off the lights, I checked through the window again and I could see him driving off.
It was the same thing the following day and the days following.
He would come at nine, sometimes at eight and would leave once I switch off the lights. Seeing him from afar served as a little comfort….
