The rest of the week went well. Esenam did not go out but stayed locked in her room all week. The only person she listened to was Yayra, who was too young to allow herself to be saddled with any cold treatment. Esenam refused to eat with the rest of the family. She kept to herself all week, fasting for a sign from her heavenly Father.

Sunday came and everyone was busy getting ready for church. They had no idea Esenam had already left for church. Esenam met Akwasi’s mom a few meters away from her house that Sunday morning. She was trying to catch Esenam at home with her parents and apologize for what her son did to her.

“Hello, Esenam I’m glad I met you here. I really need to talk to you.” Mrs. Amegashie said.

“Okay, but I can’t go back to the house. I have an appointment I don’t want to miss and if I go back to the house I don’t think I can even make it.” Esenam replied looking at her wrist watch.

“Okay, sweetheart,” she parked just around the corner; and asked Eseman to join her in the car. Esenam looked around the plush VW and admitted it was a lovely car. She liked the interior so much and noticed Mrs. Amegashie had kept it very well. “Sweetheart, I’m here to apologize on behalf of my son and to kindly ask you to reconsider your decision. What Akwasi did was inexcusable and as a mother and a woman, I know what you feel and you have every right to feel that way about Akwasi. However, there is this saying that love and jealousy can make a person do very crazy things. It is up to us to forgive each other’s mistakes for the sake of love and peace. In fact, there is no such thing as a smooth relationship. There is bound to be misunderstandings, trials, problems and disappointments. We don’t just walk away when these things arise; we deal with them and I suggest you do same. I know you love Akwasi very much and believe me when I tell you he loves you too. Please find a place in your heart to forgive him and don’t throw away a long-standing relationship for something like this. Do reconsider your decision. My son is nothing without you.” Mrs. Amegashie implored.

“Mrs. Amegashie, it’s not because of what he did that made me decide to call it off. It’s a whole lot of things I can’t talk to you about but most especially, Akwasi opposes my zeal to serve God faithfully. He wants me to stop attending church for him. He even asked me to choose between the church and him. I can’t stop going to church because he is not comfortable with it. I tried several times to make him see it from my point of view but he wouldn’t listen to me. Right now, I don’t feel anything for him, I’m very sorry but I’ll marry only for love,” Esenam replied firmly.

“Oh, has it come to that? You now refer to me as Mrs. Amegashie? What happened to Mom? I get the picture very clearly. You don’t want to have anything to do with us. Have you found someone else? Is that why you’re like this? God, Esenam, I honestly believed we meant something to you but for you………”

“Mrs. Amegashie, it’s not like…” Esenam tried to explain herself when she saw how hurt Akwasi’s mom was.

“Please, spare me any more drama; I think I am finished here. I’m done with what I came to talk to you about. It is very obvious your mind is made up. There is no point trying to even get to you. You are as stubborn as your Dad. Now, if you don’t mind I don’t want to be late for church.” Mrs. Amegashie stated when she realized Esenam’s decision was etched in stone. She knew nothing she said or did would change the girl’s mind. She started the engine and waited impatiently for Esenam to get out of her car and sped off furiously. Esenam stood still and watched the car disappear around the corner.

Am I the only one thinking that Esenam is taking this too far? I mean I agree with Akwasi’s mom, every relationships has it’s ups and downs but in time and prayers you over comes all those
