ELENA

I had only one explanation for something like this. It only seemed possible if i had friends which I don’t so it’s impossible. The explanation would be that my friends were playing an expensive prank on me. That’s what this looks like to me. A joke, a prank and nothing more.

With the kind of life I lived on the run and all, I made sure to have a photographic memory. I never forget t anyone I come across. No one especially those who helped me. Especially my good Samaritan and the reason why I’m still alive and kicking.

**THREE YEARS EARLIER**

I felt strangely warm, blinking my eyes open and regaining consciousness. A duvet was placed over me, I laid close to a fire place so everything made sense. Everything except how I got here. Last I remember was escaping Van and his goons, running until my feets couldn’t carry me, nearly passing out but thankfully got rescued by a stranger. I guess I was at his home now.

Whomever rescued me looked middle aged. Probably in his late fifties or something. I just hope he’s kind and lets me stay here for now. Later on, I’ll figure out my next course of action.

“You’re awake.”

I jump in fright. His voice comes up behind me so I have to turn around. My feet still hurts like hell and so does other parts of my body like my thighs and more. I must have exhausted myself running like that.

“Do you want something to eat or a cup of coffee?”

He asks, I stare at him forgetting how to have a conversation with someone. It’s been more than a week since I’ve spoken to anyone.

Van does all the talking anytime he comes around. I just nod my head mouthing a few monosyllabic words here and there.

“Are you dumb?”

He asks gently. I shook my head in negation.

“Can you speak?”

He asks making me chuckle. It seems funny. I’m not dumb so of course I can speak.

“Yes Sir.”

I blurt out with a little effort.

“I’m so glad. At first I thought you were wounded. I wanted to take you to a hospital but something tells me you’re on the run from something or someone and that wouldn’t be a good idea would it?”

I breathe in relief thankful for this man who seems Godsent.

“Thank you for your hospitality Sir. You have no idea how much it means to me.”

“It’s alright my dear. You seem exhausted. Get some rest.”

I laid-back down in deep thoughts. I really did need to sleep. It should be about Nine or ten am in the morning. If I can manage and stay here for today, I’ll leave by evening when it’s dark. Make my move and get away from here.

Yes, that’s what I’ll do.
