This was singlehandedly the most awkward situation in the world , I thought as I smiled woodenly at the couple in front of me. Kate and Simon–my ex-best friend and my ex- fiancé – stood before me, holding hands and looking like the picture perfect couple. Liam tightened his hand on mine, seemingly sensing my discomfort.
“Simon, Kate, I’m so glad to see you,” I lied, my heart felt like it was breaking all over again. I suddenly wasn’t so sure about this plan anymore.
“I’m glad you forgave us.” Kate smiled. “I mean, holding a grudge would’ve not been classy.” Yeah, but fuckin my fiancé was SO classy, I thought sarcastically, refraining from rolling my eyes. I had known Kate for years and I could see what she was trying to do. If it was a war she wanted, then it was a war she’d get. Simon looked at my hand in Liam’s and then he looked at Liam. He sized him up for a moment, then said,
“So, you’re the famous Liam Hawke, huh?” Liam flashed his pearly white teeth and Kate looked like she was ready to drop her panties.
“The one and only,” Liam replied.
“Huh.” Simon looked at me like I had betrayed him. Who the hell gave him the right to look at me like I betrayed him? I was actually starting to enjoy myself. I laced my fingers through Liam’s and smiled innocently at Simon and Kate.
“Why don’t we have breakfast?”
“Good idea,” Liam said, grinning at me.
“The cooks have worked very hard to prepare a delicious breakfast for us.” I took great pleasure in the surprise and envy on their faces when Liam said ‘the cooks.’ Liam and I led the way to the dining room. Once we were there I heard Kate gasp and heard Simon grumble,
“It’s not that great,” angrily. The dining room table was filled with food. Pancakes, waffles, sausage, bacon, eggs, fruits, syrup and two pitchers. One was filled with lemonade, the other was filled with orange juice. My mouth was watering and my stomach was growling as Liam walked me to my seat. He pulled my chair out for me and after I was settled, he took a seat beside me. Kate was glaring at Simon and tapping her foot impatiently, waiting for him to pull her chair out for her like Liam had done for me.
After Simon finally pulled her chair out for her, we all dug in. After breakfast we all sat down in the enormous living room. Liam and I sat on the love seat and Kate and Simon sat across from us.
“Breakfast was amazing,” Kate said, smiling at us–her eyes were more drawn to Liam though. “Thanks for inviting us, Vonna.” I flinched internally at the childhood nickname and smiled stiffly at her.
“Yeah, of course.” The hate for the pain they had caused me was burning deep in my core. But it made me stronger.
“You know, when Kayleen told me you were getting married, I was a little shocked. But after a talk with Liam, I realized that Simon and I had done the same thing. He was unfaithful, my heart belonged to someone else. I realized I shouldn’t be upset, I should be happy for you.” Simon looked at me in shock and asked,
“What do you mean we did the same thing?” I looked up at Liam and he smirked, looked at Simon and said,
“Yvonne and I have been seeing each other for a year and a half.” Kate and Simon whipped their heads around to look at me. Simon looked pissed. I only smiled widely.
“Honestly, Simon, you were obviously too caught up with Kate to pay attention to me, so I found Liam. Now I’m glad things didn’t work out between us. I’m glad we can just be friends.” I laughed, taking Liam’s hand. Liam looked down at me in amusement. Simon’s hand was clenched into a fist and Kate had jealousy written all over her face as she looked between Liam and I. I looked up at the clock and jumped up.
“I’m afraid we’ll have to say our goodbyes now. I have to go to work.” “
I’ll have Paul take you,” Liam said, looking at Chauncey who nodded and left.
“Who’s Paul?” Kate asked from behind me.
“Our chauffeur,” Liam answered her, walking me to the front door with Simon and Kate behind us. Chauncey handed me my bag at the front door and said,
“Have a g’day, Yvonne.” I smiled at him and we all walked out. We stood in the driveway, Paul was holding the car door open for me.
“Thanks for coming,” I said, smiling. “Maybe we can meet up again?” Kate smiled, Simon just looked at me. His ego was obviously bruised over thinking Liam and I had been together for a year behind his back. Well he could join the club.
“We’d love to,” Kate responded. I nodded and started to walk to the car, but Liam pulled me back and right there in front of Simon, Kate, Paul and a grinning Chauncey, he pressed his lips to mine. My heart was in my throat as I realized he was kissing me…and I was kissing him back. Had seconds gone by? Minutes? My head was spinning.
I finally managed to pull away. He was breathing hard, his blue eyes shining into mine with some kind of light I’d never seen in his eyes before. I glanced over at Kate and Simon who were watching us. Simon was glaring hatefully at us, looking like he wanted to punch something. I looked back at Liam. He smirked at my expression and said quietly,
“Don’t have too much fun without me.”
My job was something I absolutely loved. I was a fashion expert. I found the best style trends and reported them to my boss, Daniel Grover. He would take those trends and sell them to the highest bidder. Needless to say I was well paid. When I walked into my boss—Daniel’s— office, he looked up at me warily, expecting to see a zombie. The zombie I had been ever since Simon called off the wedding. He looked at me and suddenly smiled.
“Vonnie!” he cried, getting up from his desk and walking over to me. “You look fantastic, mama.”
“Thank you, Danny, baby.” I smirked. He matched my smirk and shook his head.
“I’m glad to have my Vonnie-bear back.” He rolled his eyes. “This place wasn’t the same without your expertise. ” I smiled at him.
“Well, let’s see if I’m still an expert.”
It was getting dark as Danny and I left the building. We had sent our newest finds to Donatella Versace. She had paid us $40,000 for our finds. Danny and I would split the check. $20,000 for him and $20,000 for me.
“What’s going on over there?” Danny asked, jerking his chin into the direction of a large crowd of women. They were all giggling and shrieking. One woman cried out,
“Ohmy gawd, he’s perfect!” The crowd parted and Liam came walking toward me. He glanced at Danny beside me, his expression was strangely angry.
“Yvonne, there you are.” He was now standing right in front of me. His scent was intoxicating.
“Liam? What are you doing here?” I shrieked.
“I’m here to pick you up, obviously.” He rolled his eyes, stared hard at Danny, then took my arm. He guided me through the throng of glaring women who looked like they wanted to kill me.
“I could’ve gotten Danny to drive me home,” I grumbled once we were inside the car.
“You mean Daniel Grover, the guy who has sex with every woman who shows even the slightest bit of kindness to him. Hell no. You’re not going anywhere with him.” Liam shook his head.
“Okay, first off, you are not my father so don’t even try to tell me what to do. And secondly how do you know Danny?” The car was driving smoothly down the highway as we talked. He sighed.
“I make it my business to know everyone who might be of some importance to Hawke Corp.” I nodded. It was hard to believe this sexy man beside me was a businessman. I sank back in my seat.
“You–of all people–have no room to talk about Danny. How many women have you screwed this week? Twenty, forty? Liam rolled his eyes. We seemed to roll our eyes a lot when we were around each other.
“Yvonne, you really have to learn when to stop talking.” He glared at me.
“You don’t wanna tell me?” I glared back at him.
“So you wanna know about my sex life?” His expression softened as he grinned arrogantly at me. “Why talk about it when you can experience the pleasures of being in my bed firsthand.” He looked me up and down, his gaze doing what his hands wanted to do. I laughed. The sound was shrill and nervous and I hoped he couldn’t hear it.
“No thank you. I do not want to have sex with you.” He shook his head.
“Like I’ve said before you’re an awful liar. When I kissed you today I could taste it. You wanted me just as much as I wanted you.” He scooted closer. “Stop denying me. All this sexual frustration is gonna kill me, Yvonne.” The car came to a stop and I bolted. If I stayed in the car with Liam for another second I would give into him. I had never ran so fast in my life. I ran past a surprised looking Chauncey and suddenly came to a stop.
“Yvonne, Yvonne! Dammit!” I heard Liam cursing and calling but my eyes were glued to the two people in front of me. A man and a woman stood side by side. Both tall and statuesque. They both appeared to be at least in their forties, but they looked so beautiful. The man’s hair was salt and pepper, while the woman had long blonde locks. The woman’s eyes were hazel. The man’s eyes were a deep blue and they sparkled like jewels. They reminded me of… Liam came bursting through the door.
“William,” the woman rejoiced, hugging him. Liam looked at me over the top of her head, looking very uncomfortable.
“Yvonne, meet my parents.”
