The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has announced a 5 per cent reduction in transport fares effective today, January 9, 2015.

According to the GPRTU, the reduction was necessitated by the 10 per cent reduction in petroleum prices announced by the National Petroleum Authority (NPA) In an interview on Citi FM, General Secretary of the GPRTU, Stephen Okudzeto said the list of current transport fares would be posted at various transport terminals on Friday to prevent scuffles between commuters and drivers.

He said the decision was arrived after a lengthy discussion on the impact that the reduction in petroleum prices have on their operations. The National Petroleum Authority on December 31, 2014 announced a 10% reduction in the prices of petroleum products effective 1st January 2015.

According to the NPA, the decision was due to the falling prices of petroleum products on the world market.
