Esenam was disappointed. It was not Boat at the door.

“Akwasi, what are you doing here at this time?” She checked her clothes to see if she was okay. She had taken off her jacket when she got home. She was still in her skirt and the sleeveless inner. She felt a little exposed but it was too late to do anything about it.

“I’m here to see you, my Princess. I know it’s late but we just got back from our hometown and I couldn’t wait to see you. Aren’t you going to at least ask me in?”

“Okay, come in but you can’t stay too long.” Akwasi walked in and took a seat. Esenam sat across from him. He told Esenam how much he had missed her and the fact that he had come to the realization that she was the only woman for him.

“I’ve missed you Esenam. I know this might sound weird but I can’t unlove you. My feelings for you keep escalating and I don’t know what to do about it.” He said and waited for a reaction from Esenam but got none. “Anyway, I’m here to tell you all is set for my trip to further my studies abroad. And I wanted you to be the first to know.”

“Congratulations! I wish you the very best.”

“Is that the best you can do? Can’t I at least get a kiss for that?” Esenam was silent. She was beginning to get angry. Why was it that all the guys she met lately apart from Boat want something from her? Why did guys think that every girl was there for the taking?

“Can I ask you something?” Akwasi said desperately.

“Sure!”

“Is there no chance, even if it’s slim, that you and I will get back together? I really miss us, you know. Just didn’t realize how lucky I was to have you. I want us back. I want you back in my life, Esenam. You are mine.”

“I think we’ve talked about this too many times. It’s not like I hate you or anything like that. There is no chance of us getting back together. I don’t think that’s God’s will for you and me. Just give yourself time, love will surely find you and make you the happiest man on earth. When that happens you would understand things better. We belong to the past. We shared some good times but that is gone. We can’t have it back. Lots have changed.”

“Esenam, I loved you once and God knows I love you very much now. I’ve tried so hard to let this feeling, this love I have for you die off but I’ve not succeeded in making it go away. I’ve done some very crazy things all in the name of forgetting you but they haven’t worked. I don’t want to live without you. I cannot live without you. I have a few months before I leave for the States for my studies. Can we get married before I go?” Esenam was very surprised he could ask that of her. It was clear she was not getting through to him. She loved someone else. There was no way she was going to marry another.

“You are asking me to marry you?”

“Yes, Esenam, marry me and make me the happiest man on earth. You said yes to my proposal once, remember?”

“But I can’t…”

“Please Esenam; do think about it. I’ll be good. I promise. Please marry me.”

“Why do you want to marry me, Akwasi?”

“Because I love you and want things to go back to how they were.” They were both quiet for a while. Esenam got to her feet and went to the fridge. She brought out a bottle of water and took a sip. She suddenly felt thirsty. It looked like she had a lot of convincing to do. Akwasi was losing it. She was aware it was typical of him. He did not like to lose and it was obvious he was fighting just to please his ego.

Akwasi got up and walked to her. He stood very close to her. Esenam backed up. He followed her and went in front her. He looked deep into her eyes. Esenam held his gaze and looked away. She had to find a way to get Akwasi to accept it was over between them.

“Akwasi, I want you to know that I’m not holding any grudges. I loved you once; at least that was what I believed. But so much has changed since then. Whatever I felt for you died a long time ago. Don’t think I’ve not tried to rekindle the love I had for you. You know, there was a time I’d have loved to hear you ask me to marry you but now it’s different. I don’t love you enough to settle down with you. I’m sorry I cannot marry you. We would both be very unhappy if we get married. I want you to be happy, and I know you’ll find someone to love you and make you very happy like I am now. Please understand me, I cannot marry you.” Esenam explained.

“Does all this have anything to do with the Boat guy?”

“To a large extent, yes.”

“You don’t want to hurt him, right? Esenam, I know he’s done so much for you and you must feel indebted to him. I can pay him back if you want but you can’t marry a man because you feel indebted to him.”

“Akwasi, you are missing the whole point. Yes, I don’t want to hurt Boat but it’s not because I feel indebted to him. I’m grateful he was there to help. I’m with him because I genuinely love him. In fact, I can’t imagine my life without him. I love him that much. I will cease to exist without him. Please understand me.”

“So you are saying we are history? I guess I’ll have to learn to live with that.”

“Good boy”
