ELENA

I only saw her back view but it’s her. I know it. Van wasn’t in the room. It was just her and some other men. In fact I don’t think any of them had noticed my presence at all.

I carefully walked out and closed the door.

“sh*t!”

A male voice cursed, I felt something warm on my hand.

“This is interesting.”

I mumbled. Van spilled coffee on himself and for the first time, I’m glad I was clumsy.

“You might want to clean that up.”

“Tell me you didn’t go in there.”

“Tell me you didn’t invite Octavia to this meeting and then invited me.”

“I didn’t. She’s talking strategy with them. Our meeting doesn’t start for another ten minutes or more.”

“Well then, if you recognized me I’m sure she’ll have the same luck though I’m not in the mood for her so I’ll just disappear for about fifteen minutes. Cool? Alright.”

I patted his back and walked away.

“More memories.”

I sighed to myself.

THREE YEARS EARLIER

The next week at work, more rumours had sprung up.

I didn’t even know the strength I possessed enabling me to drag my sorry ass and actually make it here.

The sight I met was not a friendly one. Co-workers I actually thought could be my friends were just jealous people dying for something to talk about. Searching for favour and attention.

People who I had worked with for a while, people who knew me could spout such awful things about me.

Many even went as far as to bring up stories about catching up have sex in the office countless times on different occasions.

Others would say I forced myself on him, I seduced my boss who was already engaged. Little did they know that I had no idea Van was engaged until it was too late. I had already fallen deeply in love with him before he confessed he was engaged. My heart was crushed, I tried to end it but he wouldn’t stop coming.

My desires were incontrollable because I loved him. After Saturday night, I reserved a special spot in my heart for him. He doesn’t deserve my love anymore and is sure as hell not going to get in.

I met yet another shock by the time I got to my office.

“Hey that’s my stuff!”

I yelled as some men boxed up my things moving them.

“It’s moving day for you.”

Octavia appeared with her signature smirk.

“What do you mean?”

“I’ve realised my fiance doesn’t need a secretary. Now why I can’t fire you, I can make you quit which is why you’re being given the crapiest working space as a reward for being a social climber. Have fun.”

She walked away with a sway of her hips. The men carried on their way manhandling most of my things and gossiping about me right to my very face.

The worse part was that it was just the beginning. The start of my never ending misery
