In the last episode, we studied about oxidative damage to the eye leading to Age related Macula Degeneration(AMD) and cataract. This episode seeks to educate us on what to do to prevent oxidative damage to our eyes.Recent studies have linked lutein and other carotenoids to the prevention of AMD.Carotenoids are a large group of yellow, orange and red plant pigments which help protect plants from sunlight. They work in a similar way in our bodies, acting as powerful antioxidants which neutralises free radicals caused by sunlight and other environmental factors.

Research increasingly supports that it is the yellow carotenoids, lutein and zeaxanthin which are the most significant. Lutein and zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in the lens and retina of the eye, playing their important role.
Examples of foods that contain carotenoids are: sweet potato, carrots, spinach, apricots, lettuce etc.

OTHER NUTRIENTS FOR THE EYE
1.VITAMIN A also known as retinol is well known for its involvement in good night vision. Examples of food rich in vit. A  are sweet potato, sweet red pepper, cantoloupe melon, vegetables etc

2.VITAMIN C & E  are present in high concentrations in the fluid in the eye called aqueous humour.Vitamin C acts as an ultraviolet filter to protect against cataract.Sources are, citrus, chili.pepper, green pepper, kale etc

3.VITAMIN B is also known as riboflavin and is essential for protein synthesis which is associated with the health of the optic nerve of the eye. Examples of foods rich vitamin B  are, peas, cereals, milk, liver etc.
